Matt
Botos, Class of 1991 Matt earned 5 varsity letters at Keystone, 3 in track& field and 2 in cross-country. Matt's specialty was the pole vault in track and arguably excelled at this one event better than any other Keystone athlete. As a sophomore, Matt placed 1st in the conference meet, set the meet record at the Mapleton Night Invitational, qualified for the Ohio State Track & Field Championships and earned a gold medal at the Ohio Sports Festival. Matt's junior year mirrored his sophomore year with another conference championship, a gold medal at the Ohio Sports Festival and a trip to Columbus for the State Championships. Matt's senior year began with an invitation to the prestigious Mansfield Mehock Relays, which annually invites the best teams from several nearby states as well as Canada. Matt's vault of 15'0" garnered first place. He won the conference championship for the third straight year with a vault of 15'4", establishing a record, which remains intact today. At the district meet, Matt set a meet record with a vault of 15'6". Moving to Columbus for yet another State Championship attempt, Matt placed first in the state in Division II with a vault of 15'7" and one-half inches. Matt's vault was the best in the entire state in 1991, regardless of the division. In the June 25, 1991 issue of the Elyria Chronicle Telegram, Sports Editor Jerry Rombach wrote...."Matt Botos is the best vaulter in the entire state in all divisions. He was the first and only individual State Champion in Keystone's 36 year history of Track & Field." After gaining the State Championship, Matt was invited to participate in the Belles and Brawn Invitational Classic in Rochester, NY where he placed first once again. Matt earned a Track & Field scholarship to the University of Cincinnati and set their school record in 1993 with a vault to 16' 8" and three-quarters. Even today, Matt's name remains active in the pole-vaulting record books. He still holds the Keystone record, the conference record and has the highest vault recorded in Lorain County history, breaking the previous mark established by Jerry Klyop in May of 1968. Matt Botos remains the only Keystone athlete ever to earn an individual State Championship in Track & Field. |
